The national government of Indonesia has been making important commitments towards a low carbon, climate resilient future. In 2015, Indonesia joined a global wave of countries that submitted their post 2020 climate change pledges to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), where it committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 29 percent to up to 41 percent below a 2030 business-as-usual scenario. Currently, there are 10 countries already submitted their 2050 long-term plan to UNFCCC.

Long-term strategy (LTS) for climate action is therefore needed to achieve mid-century goals. It outlines how a country could pursue its development trajectory while phasing out net emissions over time. LTS will provide an opportunity for countries to think through what the Paris goal mean for their own long-term emission trajectories, and in turn, what this implies for the best ways to implement their mitigation targets. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s international and national pledges, targets, and plans expire in 2030. A long-term climate strategy is hence required to provide the corridor which guides near and medium-term action and planning for Indonesia.
