Stabilizing the global climate is the greatest challenge of the 21st century. Global annual temperatures have exceeded average for 38 consecutive years. The impacts are being felt all around the world, including in Indonesia.
Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and severe. Heat waves and drought plague many countries, destroying agriculture, increasing the risk of wildfires and endangering lives. Indonesia’s archipelagic nature and vast coastal lines, in particular, puts its 1500 islands and millions of people at the risk of being drowned and causing regular flooding.
Indonesia’s recent submission of Intended Nationally Determined Contribution as well as the historic Paris Agreement should be seen as a positive momentum for stronger climate action in the country, particularly to help the world keep the global temperature rise under a 2-degree Celsius scenario and adapt to the most adverse impacts of climate change.
In this light, WRI Indonesia seeks to further assist the Indonesian government in meeting and beating its climate commitments in order to ensure successful transition to low-carbon development. On top of this, we engage businesses and civil societies at the local, national and international levels to advance transformative solutions that mitigate climate change and help communities adapt to its impacts.
