Intensification of Smallholder Palm Oil Plantations: Where Do We Begin?

The results of this study indicate that there are 499,399 hectares of smallholder oil palm plantations in 11 provinces and 23 districts in Indonesia which can be prioritized for intensification programs. These locations have low productivity with biophysical conditions suitable for oil palm cultivation, besides being close to oil palm mills and outside the forest and peat areas.

The Government of Indonesia, particularly the Ministry of Agriculture, BPDPKS, and local governments can utilize the methodology and results of this study in planning intensification programs. There are several smallholder intensification programs that currently being implemented, such as palm oil regeneration program, providing plantation facilities and infrastructure, and the development of palm oil plantation.

Inspection in the field and adding data are recommended to decide the plantation location more accurately. Additional data such as palm trees age, distributions of plantations that already have ownership, palm oil mill capacity data, and other relevant data dan could be added according to the need of intensification program implementation.
