JAKARTA, 6 Desember 2023 – At the end of 2023, the Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU) in Indonesia officially changed its name to the Sustainable Food System Coalition (Koalisi Sistem Pangan Lestari/KSPL). KSPL is part of the global Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU) community that focuses on transforming food systems and land use worldwide. In Indonesia, KSPL is looking to drive food systems transformation to fulfill national agreements, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and Indonesia's National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN).

Currently, Indonesia faces interconnected food-related issues. From a health perspective, our current food system contributes to high rates of diabetes patients and malnutrition issues such as obesity, undernourishment and micronutrient deficiencies. On the environment side, Indonesia is the world’s second largest emitter of greenhouse gases (GHG) from the food system. In terms of economies, KSPL’s studies indicate that Indonesia’s food system generated hidden costs of up to US$361.3 billion in 2018 (KSPL, 2021).

"The complex food issues increasingly demonstrate the importance of systemic thinking. The name change to KSPL shows our commitment to continuously supporting a food system transformation that can meet the needs of the Indonesian people for generations to come," said Gina Karina, Head of the Sustainable Food System Coalition Secretariat.

This name change was carried out inclusively, involving 12 main KSPL partners with diverse backgrounds, including CIFOR-ICRAF, CIPS, Entreva, GAIN Indonesia, Garda Pangan, IBCSD, KRKP, Parongpong, SYSTEMIQ, World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia, Yayasan Humanis dan Inovasi Sosial and KEHATI Foundation.

Since its establishment in Indonesia in 2018 under the name FOLU, KSPL has been driving food system transformation in Indonesia through collaboration with various stakeholders, including the government, academia, private sector, communities and the public.

"In 2024, we hope to continue supporting stakeholders and our partners through various implementation activities, including impact studies and analyses, guidelines and calculation standards development as well as multi-stakeholder partnerships," said Gina Karina.
