SMART WASTE Indonesia
Project Background
Indonesia signed the Global Methane Pledge (GMP) at COP26 in 2021 to support the global target of reducing methane emissions by 30% from 2020 levels by 2030. The Indonesian government has set a greenhouse gas emission reduction target of 31.89% unconditionally and 43.2% conditionally by 2030, including a commitment to a low-carbon, zero-emission waste sector through strategies to reduce, utilize, and prevent methane emissions from urban and industrial waste.
Project Location
Indonesia
Issue Background
Indonesia's methane emissions increased by 180% between 1990 and 2019 to 232 MtCO2e/year (excluding LULUCF). In summary, methane emissions have increased across all sectors since 1990, particularly in the waste sector, which saw a 3,703% increase. The challenge in the current situation is that the baseline data and methane emission inventories remain estimates based on the IPCC Tier 1 methodology, and the capacity for methane mitigation is not yet optimal.
Project Activities
WRI Indonesia, supported by the Global Methane Hub, strengthens Indonesia’s policy and actions to reduce methane emissions through a reliable data and tracking system, including participatory approaches in the waste sector. The project directly contributes to Indonesia’s commitment to the Global Methane Pledge, which aims to reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030. The project, Strengthening Methane Action through Reliable Tracking in Waste Sector Project (SMART WASTE), is working through three different outcomes:
Outcome 1
Methane emissions are well monitored through an advanced methane measurement methodology for reporting that is agreed as a national standard
Outcome 2
Improved Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) of Indonesia’s emissions inventory system that incorporates methane emissions
Outcome 3
Increased the capacity of stakeholders in developing strategies and implementing actions to reduce methane emissions through circular economy activities
