Policy and Implementation Outcome:
Raising Critical Mineral Production Ambition and Rate of Implementation on Climate Mitigation and Adaptation in Indonesia.

Indonesia Landscape:
The 2025 nickel decarbonization roadmap has gained momentum as a reference for achieving emissions-reduction targets. The leveraged interests are driven by the private sector in developing decarbonization strategies at both the corporate and industrial park levels.
International ESG expectations also shed light on the sustainability of critical minerals in Indonesia, raising the need for stronger recognition of existing national regulations.

Focus Area:

Responsible Mineral Production
Intervention Target
Increase the supply of responsibly produced energy transition minerals in targeted geographies.
Past Works: National Roadmap on Nickel Industry Decarbonization
Ongoing: National ESG Due Diligence for Critical Mineral Sector

Indonesia’s mining sector sits at the center of a major transition. As global expectations around environmental, social, and governance performance continue to rise, companies and regulators are under increasing pressure to ensure that mining is not only productive, but also responsible, transparent, and resilient. This is where our gap analysis comes in.

Together with the initiative led by the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs and the National Economic Council, WRI Indonesia is providing the technical leadership needed to bridge the gap toward a more sustainable Indonesian mining sector

Our work examines how Indonesia’s national regulatory framework aligns with three widely recognized international standards: IRMA, CopperMark, and IFC Performance Standards. Rather than looking at these frameworks in a broad or abstract way, we break them down through the lens of an ESG Management System. This system includes policy, impact identification, baseline data, impact assessment, management programs, monitoring, reporting, stakeholder engagement, organizational capacity, and supply chain management.

Mineral Circularity
Intervention Target
Increase the recycling rates of selected energy transition minerals and/or clean energy products in target geographies, with high ESG standards and optimized reuse/recycle decisions.
