About the Project

This project, funded by International Climate Initiative (IKI), provides governments, in-country research institutes, and other relevant stakeholders with tools and analysis to strengthen Long-term strategies for mitigating greenhouse gases (LTS), with a strong focus on energy, land-use, and food systems, in line with national development goals. Therefore, the project helps to align short- and medium-term sectoral, economic, and national development plans with LTS, including supporting a just transition. This includes identifying opportunities to enhance Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), based on LTS, while achieving development goals. The project also builds capacity beyond focus countries through convenings, research, and lesson-sharing. The project improves governments’ readiness to increase ambition and implement actions in line with the long-term transitions necessary to limit warming and adapt to climate change as envisioned in the Paris Agreement.

Issue Background

The project aims to emphasize the importance of Indonesia's climate ambitions and actions aligning with its socio-economic development goals. According to various approaches, Indonesia's current climate mitigation projections are deemed insufficient to contribute to the global climate target of limiting the temperature rise to 1.5°C by 2050.  At the same time, the country is facing developmental challenges in improving its socio-economic conditions. This indicates that Indonesia requires strategies to support the achievement of its climate ambitions alongside its development efforts, particularly given that Indonesia is a rapidly emerging global economy. Additionally, an approach is needed to ensure that all climate action efforts benefit many stakeholders and the environment.
 

Project Activities

  • Providing science-based support, such as through modeling, to ensure that climate targets can be effectively coupled with the development agenda, while also enhancing the country's climate resilience.
  • Supporting national and sub-national governments and stakeholders in developing low-carbon development documents and climate commitments at national and sub-national levels, covering different greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Equipping various stakeholders with knowledge of the just transition approach to different climate actions.
  • Developing a climate-enabling environment, governance, and policies, such as climate finance and carbon pricing, will help create a robust national climate change environment.

  • Provincial Development Planning Agencies (Bappeda) of Bali, Central Sulawesi, South Sumatra, and West Sumatra: leading partner in coordinating the development of Provincial Low Carbon Development Plan (RPRKD) in each province.
