Sumatra stretches across the westernmost part of Indonesia comprises of 10 provinces, boasting abundant natural riches. It is the home to more than 2.5 million hectares of the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra (TRHS), packed with beautiful biodiversity that unfortunately faces the threat of extinction, from tigers and elephants to birds, rhinos, and orangutans. Besides, Sumatra also has huge potential as well as challenges in managing its over 9.5 million hectares of peatlands and around 400 thousand hectares of mangroves across the West and East coast area. With a total population of around 59 million people, Sumatrans heavily rely on nature for their livelihoods, including rice fields, palm oil and rubber plantations, among other commodities. Regarding the sustainable spatial management on the island, during the presidential leadership of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, he issued Presidential Decree No.13 of 2012 on the spatial plan for the island of Sumatra. Finding alternative, forest-free, and nature-friendly sources of income while empowering local communities is crucial for ensuring the quality and prosperity of Sumatran communities' lives.
